10/20/23 Anne M. Brown named Data Science Faculty Fellow A member of the Virginia Tech faculty since 2016, Brown has continued to focus her research and teaching in the applied data science domain with an emphasis on biomedical and life sciences.
08/09/23 Carla Finkielstein named Roger H. Moore and Mojdeh Khatam-Moore Dean’s Faculty Fellow A member of the Virginia Tech faculty since 2005, Finkielstein currently serves as the associate director of research of the Academy of Integrated Science in the College of Science and as interim co-director of the Virginia Tech Cancer Research Alliance.
09/28/23 Satoru Emori named Luther and Alice Hamlett Junior Faculty Fellow A member of the Virginia Tech faculty since 2017, Emori’s research is in the area of experimental condensed matter physics with a focus on magnetic materials, and his work has been recognized with funding from a variety of sources.
08/10/23 An unexpected way to upcycle: Plastic waste transforms into soap Guoliang “Greg” Liu of the Department of Chemistry has discovered a new method of recycling plastics — from milk cartons, food containers, and plastic bags — into soap. The method: Heat the long carbon chains in the plastics then quickly cool them.

09/22/22 Students selected for Roanoke’s first undergraduate biomedical research cohort. Emily McAlpin, a nanomedicine major, is one of 20 students studying in majors in the College of Science who are part of the inaugural Integrated Health Sciences and Research Program at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC.
9/02/22 Casting for data on microplastics in the ocean With the new Seale Coastal Zone Observatory, AIS Director Robert Weiss, a professor of geosciences, aims to model the present and future effects of microplastics on the marine environment and its life.
08/19/22 Celebrating a summer of science education The Academy of Integrated Science (AIS) hosted a Nanoscience Teacher Training Workshop for science teachers of students grades 8-12. More than 50 teachers from across the state attended the three-day workshop which was comprised of 11 different sessions.
 
06/27/22 Nanoscience training gives teachers big ideas about tiny science Kristen Cox graduated from Virginia Tech in 2016, and has recently returned to campus to participate in the College of Science and their Academy of Integrated Sciences Nanoscience Teacher Training. Activities included hands-on experiments, and demos of electron microscopes. Cox, now a teacher, hopes to bring back what she's learned from the workshops to ignite her students passion for science.
06/22/22 Neuroscience’s Michael A. Fox to hold I.D. Wilson Chair in the College of Science A member of the Virginia Tech faculty since 2012, Fox is a nationally recognized neuroscientist and an expert on understanding how neuronal circuits form in the developing brain.
05/24/22 Virginia Tech nanoscientist seeks to develop thin films with a big payoff Satoru Emori, an assistant professor in the Department of Physics, wants to create new thin films made of specially engineered magnetic materials, a project funded by a five-year, $500,000 National Science Foundation CARRER Award.
04/18/22 Lauren Childs to create improved models for tracking spread of disease Childs, an assistant professor of mathematics, will use a five-year $550,000 National Science Foundation CAREER Award to develop mathematical frameworks that can decipher the dynamics of disease and suggest earlier, more effective interventions to mitigate the spread of disease.
05/25/22 Undergraduate lab integrates COVID vaccine development College of Sciences' Chixia Tian has developed a lab course that integrates cutting-edge research and COVID vaccine development into undergraduate teaching. Specifically, it involves undergraduate nanomedicine majors learning how to fabricate liposomes and load DNAs into the liposomes.
03/17/22 Microbiologist Frank Aylward to use $989,000 NSF CAREER Award to study ‘giant’ viruses found in ecosystems Aylward, an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, will use the award funding to better understand how such viruses affect ecosystems.
03/08/22 Robert Weiss named director of Academy of Integrated Science in College of Science The academy was started in 2011 by the late Lay Nam Chang, then dean of the College of Science, with the mission of exploring powerful new approaches to current complex scientific problems.
08/24/21 New speakers developed partly at Virginia Tech promise big and energy-efficient sound Chemistry's Guoliang “Greg” Liu has designed a prototype “electrostatic” speaker that boasts the thinnest and lightest-weight speaker membrane with the highest aspect ratio ever and is 10 to 100 times more energy efficient.

Hochella honored with two society medals for research Hochella, a University Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geosciences, recently was honored with the Geochemical Society Clair C. 07/23/21 Summer interns gain hands-on learning in Virginia Tech’s COVID-19 testing lab During two five-week, hands-on sessions, the interns worked in the Molecular Diagnostics Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC and took classes led by Carla Finkielstein, the lab’s scientific director and an associate professor at the research institute.

After serving in the U.S. Navy, where he was deployed to Iraq and Italy, Parks returned to Blacksburg and will graduate on Dec. 18 with a double major in economics and computational modeling and data analytics, both from the College of Science.s
12/10/20 In memoriam: Lay Nam Chang, founding dean of the College of Science, professor of physicsChang was dean of the College of Science from 2003 to 2016. Prior to that, he was the last dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, serving from 2002 to 2003 when he guided the academic restructuring that resulted in two new colleges — the College of Science and the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.
10/14/20 The race against cancer’s clock: New study shows chronic jet lag impairs immune response, accelerates tumor growthA new study led by Carla Finkielstein, an associate professor at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC, and Diego Golombek, a professor at the National University of Quilmes, reveals that chronic jet lag impedes the body’s immune system and also changes the tumor microenvironment, favoring tumor growth.
